Tips for a Great Ride

Hydration: Staying hydrated is crucial when mountain biking in Central Florida’s warm and humid climate. Carry an adequate supply of water and electrolyte-rich beverages to replenish fluids lost through sweating. Invest in a hydration pack or water bottle cages for easy access during the ride.

Protective Gear: Always wear a properly fitted helmet to protect your head in case of falls or accidents. Additionally, consider wearing knee and elbow pads to minimize injuries during technical sections of the trails.

Trail Etiquette: Respect other trail users and follow trail etiquette. Yield to hikers and horseback riders, and use caution when passing fellow mountain bikers. Avoid skidding or damaging trails and always stay on designated paths to preserve the natural environment.

Bike Maintenance: Ensure your bike is in good working condition before hitting the trails. Regularly check tire pressure, brakes, and suspension to ensure optimal performance. Carry basic tools and spare parts for quick repairs, such as a multi-tool, spare tubes, and a pump.

Trail Difficulty: Be aware of your skill level and choose trails that match your abilities. Central Florida offers a wide range of trails catering to beginners, intermediate riders, and advanced bikers. Gradually progress to more challenging trails as your skills improve.

Weather Awareness: Keep an eye on weather conditions before heading out on a ride. Thunderstorms are common in Central Florida, and it’s important to prioritize safety by avoiding biking during severe weather. Pack a lightweight rain jacket for unexpected showers.

Critters: When you’re off in the woods, you’re in someone’s ecosystem. Be aware of critters that bite, from snakes (some poisonous) to bears, panthers, and alligators. Some of my best rides featured a glimpse of a deer in the early morning at a watering hole or gators basking on a river bank. Be aware and stay safe.
