How Going Green is Saving Casinos Millions

For many large businesses, being able to find ways to save money on a multitude of levels has been the only way to stay afloat amid worrying economic uncertainties. Through such cost-cutting measures companies are able to maneuver their budgets better for more pressing matters that essentially could safeguard their business and put things in place for a more sustainable future.

That’s why many large businesses are trying to adopt a “greener outlook” in order to eradicate needless costs. Earlier this year, Business Week’s Christopher Palmeri used casinos across the United States as the perfect examples of businesses that have had to incur huge losses because of changing times. He stated that due to their huge operational costs for things such as lighting, staff costs, wastage removal and electricity bills, casinos had to rethink their business models to ward off closure.

Many variables have forced casinos to adopt a more “greener” business model none more so that impact online gaming has had on its overall revenues. When online casino portals first saw their launch in 1996 through InterCasino land-based casinos suffered considerably. Thus, they began to look at ways to offer a more varied array of services to its patrons as well as cost-cutting measures in many areas of their industry.

However, the latest way of cutting costs or creating revenue is through a varied range of green technology to stabilize casinos spiraling operational costs. One of the biggest trends among casinos is recycling rainwater for their toilet systems. Casinos spend millions on water per year to flush their toilets but now experts have come up with a system whereby they replace the fresh water with recycled rainwater saving many establishments millions per year.

Also, many casinos have started tapping into solar energy, and using this as a way to harness renewable energy sources. It is estimated that casinos that have such facilities running currently are saving around 5-10% off their annual electricity bills because of their solar energy panels.

Finally, there’s anaerobic digestion, which is the procedure where biodegradable materials like surplus food are used as a source of fuel upon being broken down to offset extortionate electricity costs.

One of the first innovative casinos to implement such a strategy was Riverside Casino in Illinois, and is now said to be running 70% of its facilities on renewable energy. Such measures that consider key decision-making across the all areas of a casino’s budget have helped reinvigorate many businesses and become sustainable for the future.

With greener models being employed daily by larger corporations it gives natural resources time to replenish and has less of a detrimental affect on the environment whilst highlighting the importance of going green. It has also had a positive affect on the job market where many jobs have been created in green technology since its inception. And many of these jobs are created in-house in organizations that need guidance on such key areas.

So, as casinos attempt to operate in difficult times, it refreshing to know that many are now devising sustainable programs to safeguard their futures, and more importantly are considering the environment more, moving forward.
